ANSWERS · GOOGLE REVIEWS

Do Google reviews help my local ranking?

Yes. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence is partly based on how many reviews you have. Its help page says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. As of October 2026, here is what that does and doesn’t mean for your Business Profile.

WHAT GOOGLE SAYS

How do reviews fit into Google’s local ranking?

Google names three main factors. Relevance is how well your profile matches what someone searched for. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well-known your business is, and Google says that is based on things like how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have. Reviews sit inside prominence. They are one input, not the whole ranking.

THE THREE FACTORS

Where reviews help, and where they can’t

reviews can helpProminence

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking. It also says positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out.

reviews don’t touch thisDistance

How far you are from the searcher is fixed by where they are standing. No number of reviews moves your shop closer.

fix it in your profileRelevance

Google says complete, detailed business info helps it match you to the right searches. That means hours, categories, address or service area, and the other details on your profile.

WHAT DOESN’T WORK

Can you pay Google for a better local ranking?

No. Google’s help page says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. So reviews you earn from real customers are one of the few levers you control. Verification, accurate info and a complete profile matter too; if you don’t show up at all, start with why your business isn’t showing up on Google Maps.

What should you do about reviews?

  1. Ask customers who were happy with the job to leave a Google review. Google has its own tips for getting more reviews, linked from the help page below.
  2. Reply to the reviews you get. Google says replying shows you value feedback.
  3. Keep your hours, categories, address or service area and phone number accurate on your profile.
  4. Add photos and videos of your work, which Google lists as another way to stand out.
  5. Check back in a few weeks. Reviews are one signal among several, so don’t expect one batch of five-star reviews to change your ranking overnight.
